As part of my residency at The Acres during 2023/2024, I drew in my sketchbook every week for many months. I mainly drew flowers in ink with crayons to indicate colour. This rich source of observational material has led to a series of floral paintings painted in the studio.

This piece is inspired by the huge rose hedge at The Acres.

The hedge was planted as a windbreak for the flower beds. They are tropical roses, Chinese in origin, which were grown at a rose farm in Samsonvale. The rose buds are cerise and as the rose matures the colour turns from pink to peach and then almost white as the blossom fades. The roses also serve as an important food source for the 50 hives of bees. They reliably flower through all seasons and are drought-resistant.
